Acne Medications and Treatments

There are millions of people around the world who suffer with acne (Zits), fortunately, the problems it causes is gradually being conquered. This is good news with the range of effective skin care treatments improving all the time.

We can classify acne skin care products into 3 broad categories, preventive, over-the-counter, specialized and on-prescription acne products.

For example, toners and skin cleansers that have been formulated to help prevent acne. While many sufferers use these products there are even more people who just want to keep their skin clean and conditioned.

They work by limiting the production of sebum/oil and prevent clogging of skin pores. When the pores become clogged with this oil, bacteria which can cause the problem begin to grow.

There are now more and more of these types of products available over the counter. The peels clean the skin by removing all surface pollution and dead skin cells which can block the pores.

Many different, specially formulated acne skin care products designed to reduce the problems have now been made available without prescription. These products have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as ingredients which the bacterium reacts badly to.

It is preferable when you first start using this type of product to keep the concentration of it low, around 5.5 percent is best. If this is proving difficult, your dermatologist should be able to help.

There are benefits of seeing your doctor or dermatologist, they can prescribe you with a prescription for treatments not available over the counter, for example a course of antibiotics. You are warned never to attempt this yourself as it could lead to serious skin problems.

Another effective course of skin care treatment is the use of hormone therapy, hormone changes are know to be one cause of acne. This means that a sufferer does not have to put up with this condition anymore.
